Driving license translation. Here's how to do it.

You are a foreign citizen who lives or is in Italy and you want to drive a car?

I am Bolchis Oana Raluca, a registered interpreter-translator and I will briefly explain how to do it..

To do it, you will need a translation of your original driving license. Here is a step by step guide on how to get it:

1. Check if your country has an agreement with Italy:

Italy has reciprocity agreements with many countries that allow citizens to drive with their original license for a limited period of time (usually from 1 a 6 months) from the date of residence. To check if your country has an agreement with Italy, consult the website of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

If your country has an agreement with Italy:

  • EU/EEA driving license: If you have a driving license issued by a country in the European Union or the European Economic Area, you don't need a translation. Your driving license is valid in Italy for the same period of validity as it is valid in your country of origin.
  • Driving license from other countries: If you have a driving license issued by a country that has a reciprocity agreement with Italy, you can drive with your original license for a limited period of time. At the end of this period, you will need to apply for an Italian driving licence.

If your country does not have an agreement with Italy:

  • International driving license: In this case, you will be able to drive in Italy for one year from the date of registration of your vehicle with an international driving license, in addition to your original license. The international driving license can be obtained at the ACI office (Automobile Club of Italy) of your country of residence.
  • Italian driving licence: To drive in Italy for a period of time exceeding one year, you will need to apply for an Italian driving licence. To do it, you will have to take a theoretical and practical driving test at the Italian Civil Motorisation.

2. Translation of the driving licence:

Regardless of your case, if your license is not in Italian, you will need a sworn translation into Italian. The translation can be carried out by an official registered translator.

3. Necessary documents:

To obtain a sworn translation (sworn) of your license, the translator needs your original driving license or a certified copy of the original. Afterwards, the translator carries out the translation which he will take to the Court for certification and will then deliver it to you.

4. Costs:

The cost of the sworn translation (sworn) varies depending on the translator and the length of the license. In general, the cost is between 50 and i 100 euro.

5. Advice:

  • I advise you to start the procedure for obtaining the translation of your driving license well in advance, especially if you need an Italian driving license.
  • Make sure you choose an official and qualified translator.
  • Keep your original license, the sworn translation and the Italian driving licence (if you got one) in a safe place.

Driving in Italy safely and legally is important! By following these steps, you will be able to get your license translated and drive without worries.
